FBI Library Mission Statement

August 20, 2001

The purpose of the FBI’s Library home page is to provide an electronic interface to identify informational resources available at or through the FBI Library to serve the current FBI community and local & state law enforcement. The emphasis is on databases, licensed subscription indexes, reference sources, subject guides, and other criminal justice resources.

The FBI Library supports the FBI in its statutory mission to uphold the law through investigation of violations of federal criminal law; to protect the United States from foreign intelligence and terrorist activities; and to provide leadership and law enforcement assistance to federal, state, local, and international agencies.

The Library also supports the FBI Training Division in its mission to lead and inspire education and development of the criminal justice community; to influence change and force partnerships that insure the safety and security of the citizens of the United States and around the world.

As the primary information center for the FBI and law enforcement, the Library’s goals are:

To provide access to resources that reflect a broad range of perspectives, viewpoints, and approaches.

To provide professional reference services to respond to research requests.

To provide instruction in the use of resources, with an emphasis on the informed evaluation of information sources.

To promote communication and cooperation among libraries in order to share law enforcement information and resources.
